مطالعۀ باستان‌شناختی جوامع اسلامی، که از حوزۀ تاریخ هنر و معماری اسلامی زاده شده، رشته‌ای نسبتاً جوان است. خاستگاه [این رشته] در دوره‌های متأخر استعماریِ سده‌های نوزدهم و بیستم است و گسترش سریع آن از دهۀ ۱۹۸۰ لزوم نوعی ارزیابی دوباره از جایگاه امروزیِ آن را توجیه می‌کند. در این دست‌نامه، برای نخستین بار پیمایشی از باستان‌شناسی اسلامی در مقیاسی جهانی عرضه شده و در آن، شرح گسترش رشته آمده و نقدهای بی‌طرفانه از وضع امروز این حوزه در سرزمین‌های اسلامی مرکزی، غرب اسلامی، افریقای زیرصحرایی، و آسیا فراهم شده است. مشارکت بین‌المللی در این مجموعه متضمن زمینه‌هایی هم‌چون زمان و فرایند اسلامی شدن، معضلات دوره‌بندی و منطقه‌گرایی در فرهنگ مادی، شهرها و حومۀ شهرها، آمیختگی فرهنگی، تنوع فرهنگی و دینی، مدیریت منابع طبیعی، تجارت بین‌المللی در دوره‌های تاریخی متأخر، و مهاجرت است. ارزیابی انتقادی روش‌هایی کنونیِ درگیریِ باستان‌شناسان با میراث فرهنگی اسلامی و جوامع محلی پایان‌بخش این مجموعه است و در آن بر مسائل اخلاقیِ مرتبط با مطالعۀ فرهنگ‌ها و ادیان زنده  تأکید شده. این کتاب، با تصویرسازیِ غنی به همراه ارجاعات فراوان، اثری مرجع دربارۀ منازعاتی است که پیش‌برندۀ کنونی این حوزه است.
