هدف از انتشار این مجله، راه‌اندازی مرجعی تازه برای باستان‌شناسان، مورخانِ (هنر)، انسان‌شناسان، نمایشگاه‌گردانان، دانشوران و دانشجویان باستان‌شناسی، تاریخِ (هنر)، معماری، انسان‌شناسی و مردم‌شناسی در حوزۀ جهان اسلام است؛ بنا بر این تعریفی بسیط‌تر از فرهنگ مادی در نظر است که فقط شامل آثار هنری یا سازه‌های معماری و بناهای یادمانی نمی‌شود، بلکه صنایع دستی نیز ذیل آن قرار می‌گیرد. هدف مجله اطلاع‌رسانی به سایر رشته‌ها و تاریخ‌نگاران نیز هست، از این رو مثلا گزارش‌های کاوش‌های باستان‌شناسی نیز در آن منتشر خواهد شد.

 

همچنین، در این مجله به آن بخش از سرزمین‌های اسلامیِ خارج از حوزۀ خاورمیانه و شمال افریقا نیز که یا تاکنون مورد توجه نبوده‌اند و یا به تازگی مورد توجه و تمرکز قرار گرفته‌اند نیز خواهند پرداخت، از جمله: منطقۀ جنوب صحرای بزرگ افریقا (اصطلاحاً افریقای سیاه)، اقیانوس هند، آسیای میانه، هند، جنوب شرقی آسیا و اروپا.

 

مجله به زبان‌های انگلیسی، فرانسه، آلمانی و اسپانیایی مقاله می‌پذیرد، نیز گزارش‌های کوتاه به زبان‌های عربی، فارسی و ترکی‌ای که همراهش چکیده‌ای انگلیسی باشد.
